Big Health Update: I Have Lyme Disease

Almost four years ago, I developed the symptom set of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I was constantly exhausted and always felt like I was a day away from the flu. Over time, more and more random symptoms crept in: swollen glands, hoarse throat, frequent fevers, food sensitivities, lightheadedness, brain fog, chronic gastritis, pelvic pain, and more. For the most part, doctors had no idea what was wrong with me. They tested me for mono, strep, thyroid disorders, anemia, ulcers, UTIs, allergies, and so much more. All came back normal. I had the symptom set of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Interstitial Cystitis, but both are diagnoses of exclusion, without a known cause…

How I Kicked My Autoimmune Disorder Through Lifestyle

{Guest Post} Today’s post comes from Kelsi Folsom of Shameless Beauty I was so inspired by her story of overcoming a painful autoimmune disorder that I asked her to share her journey here. I hope this story will remind you that healing is possible, and give you some ideas for how to move forward! If you had told me five years ago, that there would come a day where I wouldn’t wake up in pain, I would have shrugged my shoulders and said, “That’s a nice thought, but I doubt that will ever happen.” My body began the path towards degeneration in elementary school, with IBS and severe back pain.…

How I Cope With High-Functioning Anxiety

{Guest Post} Today’s post comes from Courtney Hollenbeck, who runs the inspirational Invisible Crown blog. I hope her tips for anxiety management will help you peacefully navigate the often-stressful holiday season! People pleaser. Over thinker. Procrastinator. Insomniac. Dwells on past mistakes. Nervous. Flaky. Loyal to a fault. These are all attributes of a person who struggles with high functioning anxiety. I am that person. To the outside observer, I’m a high-achieving, ambitious, and positive person who loves people. All of those things can be true, but take a peek inside my head and you’ll see the perpetual, gnawing anxiety beneath them. Stage Fright In my youth, I was involved in every…

My Experience with DNRS – A Natural Treatment for Chronic Illness

Three years ago, I developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It started with extreme fatigue, but within a year, I had a long list of strange symptoms. I suffered from stomach pain, food sensitivities, sore throat, swollen glands, burning ears, dizziness, brain fog, and more. My doctors were completely stumped, and I was desperate for relief. During this time, I read a blog post about the Dynamic Neural Retraining System or DNRS. The writer had suffered from debilitating fatigue, digestive issues, chronic inflammation, and multiple chemical sensitivities for 11 years. But using the DNRS program, she made a complete recovery. At the time, it sounded too good to be true. How could one…

    Switching to a Safety Razor

In the last few months, I’ve been gradually switching to more natural household products. My main motivation was health: I wanted to see if I could reduce my toxic load and heal my chronic fatigue. But I was also interested in developing a more eco-friendly lifestyle. So I decided to try out a safety razor. Safety razors are a zero-waste alternative to plastic razors. They’re usually made of stainless steel and contain a thin blade that can be changed out and recycled. Basically, it’s your great-grandpa’s razor. But better.   The Benefits of Safety Razors Safety razors are a little trendy right now. Hipsters and bloggers love to gush about…

What It’s Like To Be Too Sick To Work

When I was a kid, I loved a good sick day. Of course I didn’t like being sick. But there’s a sweet spot where you’re just sick enough to stay home from school, but not too sick to watch daytime TV in your pajamas. That’s when it was really fun. Or so I thought. When I was twenty six, I developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I started having bouts of fatigue and muscle weakness that would last for days or weeks on end. Gradually I developed more symptoms: swollen throat, burning ears, stomach pain, brain fog, dizziness, and more. I always felt like I was one day away from the flu. Not…

Using EMDR Therapy to Heal Chronic Fatigue

For the past three months, I’ve been using EMDR therapy to treat my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It’s an unusual approach: using the mind to heal the body. But when your disease has no treatment, you go to some weird lengths to heal. Some patients try extreme diets, untested supplements, and even parasites in the pursuit of healing. In comparison, going to therapy seems pretty innocuous. But many CFS patients have a big issue with this kind of treatment. Our symptoms are so strange that we’re often written off as “crazy” or having a problem that’s “all in our head.” Doing a mind-based therapy feels like admitting insanity. I get it.…
